What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that takes the place of a natural tooth root. Once it is placed in the jaw, the bone gradually bonds with it over a few months, creating a stable foundation. A crown, a bridge or a full set of teeth can then be attached on top.

Recent implant case: replacing a missing lower molar
The patient had been missing her lower left first molar (tooth 36) for approximately two years. The original tooth fractured while she was biting a nut before relocating to Malaysia. After moving here, she wanted to find a dentist she felt comfortable trusting with her implant treatment.
We discussed several ways of replacing the missing tooth, including a conventional dental bridge, a flexible denture and a dental implant.
The neighbouring teeth were healthy and sound. After discussing the advantages, limitations and treatment process of each option, the patient preferred an implant so that the adjacent healthy teeth would not need to be prepared for a conventional bridge.
A CBCT scan was taken as part of the implant-planning protocol and showed adequate bone for implant placement. A 3D intraoral scan was also used as part of the digital planning and restorative workflow. Bone grafting was not required.
A Straumann dental implant was placed at tooth 36 on 12 November 2025. Primary stability was achieved at the time of placement.
The implant was allowed to heal for approximately three months. A healing abutment was subsequently used, followed by a digital intraoral scan for the final implant restoration.
A zirconia implant crown was fitted to replace the missing lower molar. At follow-up, the restoration was functioning well. The patient was pleased to have a fixed tooth again after approximately two years without the molar, and reported that the restored tooth felt and functioned much like a natural tooth.
Dr Teo's clinical note: the condition of the neighbouring teeth is an important consideration when deciding how to replace a missing tooth. In this case, the adjacent teeth were sound. An implant allowed us to replace the missing molar without preparing those healthy teeth for a conventional bridge.

Implant crown: replacing a single tooth
When you are missing one tooth, an implant crown is often the simplest way to restore it. A single implant is placed where the tooth used to be, and once it has healed, a custom crown is fitted on top and matched to the teeth around it.
Unlike a conventional bridge, an implant crown does not rely on grinding down the healthy teeth on either side. It stands on its own, which keeps the rest of your smile intact and makes cleaning around it straightforward.
Implant supported bridge: replacing several teeth
If you have lost several teeth in a row, an implant supported bridge can replace them without needing one implant for every gap. Two or more implants act as anchors, and a bridge of connected teeth is secured across them.
This restores your ability to chew comfortably and spreads the biting force evenly, which protects both the implants and the bone underneath. It is a practical option when a single crown is not enough but a full arch is more than you need.
All-on-X: a full arch of teeth
For patients who have lost most or all of their teeth in one jaw, or whose remaining teeth are failing, All-on-X replaces a complete arch with a fixed set of teeth supported by just a few implants.
The two most common approaches are All-on-4 and All-on-6, named after the number of implants used. Four or six implants are positioned to make the most of your available bone, and a full bridge is fixed onto them. In many cases a temporary set of teeth can be fitted on the same day, so you do not leave without teeth.
Whether All-on-4 or All-on-6 suits you better depends on your bone volume, your bite and your general health. Dr Teo assesses this during your consultation and explains which option gives you the most stable result for your situation.
Your implant treatment pathway
Implant treatment runs in stages, with healing time in between. Knowing the order of those stages makes the whole process easier to plan around.
Consultation and assessment. We review your medical and dental history, the missing tooth or teeth, your gums, bite and treatment goals. A 3D intraoral scan of your teeth and gums can be taken as part of the digital planning process.
CBCT and implant planning. A CBCT scan forms part of the planning protocol for every implant case at Heal Dental. It allows Dr Teo to assess the available bone and surrounding anatomical structures before planning the implant position.
Implant placement. The dental implant is placed under local anaesthetic according to the individual treatment plan, and aftercare instructions are provided following the procedure. In suitable cases a temporary tooth can be fitted earlier in treatment, and Dr Teo will confirm whether that applies to you.
Healing and restorative planning. The implant is given time to integrate with the bone and is reviewed during healing. A healing abutment may be used where required. Once the implant is ready for restoration, a 3D intraoral scan can be taken to digitally plan the final crown, bridge or full-arch restoration.
Final restoration and maintenance. The final implant crown, bridge or full-arch restoration is fitted. The bite, appearance and cleaning access are reviewed, followed by ongoing dental reviews and maintenance.
Individual timelines and stages differ from one patient to another, depending on your bone, your general health and how the implant heals. CBCT for implant planning
At Heal Dental, a CBCT scan forms part of the treatment-planning protocol for every dental implant case. The three-dimensional imaging allows Dr Teo to assess the available bone and surrounding anatomical structures before planning the implant position.
A CBCT is a three-dimensional radiographic scan, so it shows bone and the structures around it in a way a standard dental X-ray cannot. It is a separate step from the intraoral scan described below.
3D digital intraoral scanning
We use an intraoral scanner at Heal Dental to create a detailed 3D digital model of your teeth and gums. This forms part of our digital treatment-planning and restorative workflow, and can also be used when designing the final implant crown, bridge or other restoration.
An intraoral scan is not an X-ray and does not image bone. It records the shape of your teeth and gums, which is why it is used alongside a CBCT rather than in place of one.

Am I suitable for dental implants?
Most adults with one or more missing teeth are candidates for implants, as long as they have healthy gums and enough bone to support the implant. Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking can affect healing, so Dr Teo reviews your medical history and arranges a CBCT scan before confirming whether implants are right for you. Even where bone is limited, options such as grafting or All-on-4 may still make treatment possible.
Are dental implants painful?
Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure itself. How long does the whole process take?
From start to finish, implant treatment often takes between three and six months, most of which is healing time while the implant bonds with the bone. How long do dental implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental implants can last many years, and the titanium implant itself is designed as a long-term solution.
