Frequently asked questions
What is a dental cleaning and exam?
A dental cleaning and exam is a routine visit where your dentist checks your teeth, gums, and bite, then removes the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing can't shift. Most people need one every six months. At Heal Dental it covers a full check, scaling, a polish, and straight advice on your home care.
How much does scaling and polishing cost in KL?
At Heal Dental Clinic Bukit Jalil, scaling and polishing costs RM100 to RM200, depending on the amount of tartar buildup and staining. That price includes a full check up of your teeth, gums, and bite. If heavy buildup or gum disease means you need deeper cleaning, we will explain the options and cost before starting anything. If your employer's dental benefits are managed by PMCare, routine scaling may be covered under your panel visit; message us on WhatsApp to check.
What is subgingival scaling, and is it included in the price?
Routine scaling and polishing cleans the tooth surfaces above and just at the gumline. Subgingival scaling goes deeper, removing the hardened tartar that has built up below the gumline inside the gum pockets, and is usually needed when gum disease has started. It takes longer, may need local anaesthetic, and is sometimes completed over more than one visit, so it is charged separately from routine scaling. If your examination shows you need it, we will explain why and confirm the cost with you before any treatment begins.
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Every six months for most people. If you have gum disease, diabetes, or wear braces, we may recommend every three to four months. We'll set a schedule that fits your mouth, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
Does scaling damage or loosen my teeth?
No. Scaling removes the hardened tartar that's actually harming your gums. If teeth feel slightly different afterwards, it's because we've cleared away buildup that was wedged between them, not because anything was loosened.
Is teeth cleaning painful?
For most patients it's completely comfortable. If your gums are inflamed or sensitive, we work gently and can numb the area. Tell us if anything feels off and we'll adjust.
Why do my gums bleed during cleaning?
Bleeding usually means early gum inflammation from plaque buildup, not that we're being rough. With a proper clean and better home care, bleeding typically settles within a week or two.
Is scaling safe during pregnancy?
Yes, and it's actually recommended, since pregnancy hormones make gums more prone to inflammation. The second trimester is the most comfortable time. Tell us you're pregnant and we'll tailor the visit.
